I am a New Yorker. I am not one of those Fake New Yorkers from upstate or the Island, or anyplace other than New York City. I was born and raised there and spent most of my life there, even though I now reside in So. Florida. I grew up where there were people, stores, and reality. Back in the day I remember having at least 2 dry cleaners on each and every block. You dropped your stuff off there and by the next day or two you picked them up looking clean, freshly pressed, and as good as new. There were never any stains, wrinkles, or anything to complain about. If there was a button missing somewhere, it was replaced. They used chemicals or whatever, but the end result was that your clothing was always clean.
There was also your chinese laundry on every block. This was the place you brought your shirts and sheets and incidentals. There were always huge laundry bags behind the counter, with a nice chinese wife or husband taking care of you. There was always at least one family with kids living in the back of the store as well and cooking there. The kids were always doing homework or helping out. In fact, it always smelled funny from the cooking...But you got your pink or blue ticket and off you went. Then never counted what you brought in, but a week later you picked up your stuff ironed perfectly, and wrapped in brown paper with sting around it. Actually, you only picked it up if you had the ticket. If you lost your ticket, you were fucked........unless of course you had been taking your stuff there for years and they knew you. Of course it was never by name, but by looks.
So................?????? Why have I gone into detail about cleaners ????? Simple......Because now, they all suck....The dry cleaners are not permitted to use those chemicals that actually cleaned clothing, so now everything comes back somewhat clean and pressed like shit. I don't even think they clean anything, but have fans all over the place just to get the smell out.....I also don't know if they press anything or just leave it out back and drive over it with a Mac Truck. In any event, the quality of work sucks.
Here in Florida, most of the cleaners have this gimmick where all dry cleaning is the same price. It makes no difference what you pay because it all stinks....There are no more Chinese laundries, as the Chinese do not do this anymore. Why should they when they are so busy owning U.S. Banks, and owning most of the prime real estate in the USA ???? So.......those Chinese laundries are now incorporated with the dry cleaners. WTF.....they can't do dry cleaning right, so might as well let them fuck-up your shirts as well....They have never learned how to neatly press and fold a shirt like the Chinese laundries did, so they come back on wire hangers where they are pressed by blind foreigners who have no trouble working for $6.00 per hour in the modern day sweat shop.
The modern day dry cleaners certainly know how to ruin everything.. Oh, try to tell them a button came off the last time you had it cleaned or laundered and you will get a look that will scare you. If they do sew on another button to replace the one they broke with their shit machinery, I guarantee you the thread will be of another color, and the button will not match.
But there is one thing that is positive about the modern day cleaners. That is the fact that your shirts will not smell like they did from the chinese laundry. Maybe that is because there are not two families living in the store 24/7. They will also not look like they did either.
