All New Vintage

Sometimes it is just fun to sit back and reflect.  There is so much to bitch and complain about these days that it is very easy to be cynical, as well as see ridiculous, and pathetic stuff. Politics, Movies, TV, and even on-line blogs add to this.  But on the other hand, it is sometimes nice to remember the past and possibly show or teach some of the younger readers about how things were.  There is a book I sometimes make reference to called "Going , Going, Gone." While some of these are not in the book, I am hoping that some of you might just enjoy being reminded of these.

Certainly there was the milkman, pictured above. Now think of all the things associated with the millkman........like the iceman who delivered ice prior to ice makers and freezers, and the egg man, the soda man, the seltzer man, the dry cleaner man,.....etc.  I use the word man, because women never did those jobs.  Of course these luxuries were probably only available in large cities and in apartment houses.  I grew up in the bronx, NY in an apartment house near Yankee Stadium, so some of this might be very regional.
Later on there were drive in theatres where I can still remember making out with my girl friend at the time.  And there were only single screen movie theatres where we were also able to make out in the last row of the balcony.  (Sometimes a few rows lower on a busy night ) . There were not many places to go where you could be alone with a girl. Times were different. There was also the beginning of this new and revolutionary thing called Techicolor.......OMG, how advanced we were then ?

Let us not forget the corner soda shop. We referred to it as the local candy store. Here you could have food, drinks, and especially an egg cream (there is an entire blog dedicated to egg creams ) and the local family restaurant.  As a teenager we would hang out at the soda shop especially late Saturday Night.  There all the guys would open their wallets clearly showing the crease of a trojan that was probably there for ages and left an indentation.. If someone was lucky enough to get laid, it was a big thing and he would probably buy us all an egg cream.

When in your parents car going on a long trip, you knew you would see the Burma Shave signs on the side of the road.  This was always a treat as you hope you would see it before your brother or sister that was annoying you  in the back seat...............And of course if you were a teenage kid or just working, you would wear a white shirt that was advertised by some guy that would eventually be the president of the USA.
But there were 2 things that every teenage boy carried around with them 24/7.  That is the church key in the event were were able to score some beer, and our Zippo lighter to of course light are cigarettes.  Every kid smoked back then.  We certainly missed out on the good pot and drugs that we had to wait several years for.
Hope this brings back some good memories for some of you.  I am sure my next post will bitch or complain about something.  Enjoy the peace.
